Case Brief
RBI had imposed directions on The Panihati Co-operative Bank Limited, Panihati, Kolkata, West Bengal from April 24, 2014 because of its precarious financial position, and those directions were extended from time to time up to October 23, 2015. In this release, RBI states that it has now withdrawn those directions with effect from close of business on October 16, 2015. The bank is still expected to operate under operational instructions.
Why RBI Acted
Reserve Bank had issued directions to The Panihati Co-operative Bank Limited, Panihati, Kolkata, West Bengal effective April 24, 2014 because of its precarious financial position. Those directions were later extended from time to time up to October 23, 2015. On being satisfied, RBI withdrew the directions with effect from close of business on October 16, 2015, while stating that the bank would continue to operate under operational instructions.
Operating Impact
The prior RBI directions no longer apply from the stated effective time, restoring normality relative to that order. The bank still has to comply with operational instructions, but the withdrawn directions themselves no longer impose additional restrictions on the bank or its customers.
