Case Brief
What Happened
By an order dated April 2, 2026, RBI imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1.09 lakh on Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Urban Cooperative Bank Ltd., Amravati, Maharashtra. The penalty was imposed after a statutory inspection and subsequent show-cause proceedings found sustained charges of non-compliance with RBI directions on investment portfolio management, exposure norms for urban co-operative banks, and NEFT customer charges. RBI said the bank breached the prudential single-counterparty exposure limit for non-SLR investments on certain occasions and levied charges above the prescribed regulatory ceiling on certain NEFT transactions, invoking powers under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
