Case Brief
What Happened
The Reserve Bank of India imposed a monetary penalty of ₹5.00 lakh on The Needs of Life Co-operative Bank Ltd, Fort, Mumbai under Section 47A(1)(b) read with Section 46(4) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (as applicable to co-operative societies). RBI found violations of directives/guidelines relating to members holding paid-up share capital beyond the stipulated limit, breaches of limits on unsecured advances and unsecured overdraft facilities, and non-adherence to KYC requirements, including non-updation of KYC documents, non-allocation of UCIC, and lack of an effective system for identifying and reporting suspicious transactions to FIU-IND. After a show-cause process and consideration of the bank's written and oral submissions, RBI concluded the contraventions were substantiated and imposed the penalty.
